Will Hoge (solo) w/ Meaghan Farrell

Will 422511698672958

Born and raised in Tennessee, songwriter Will Hoge made his name honing a blend of soulful Americana and heartland rock & roll. After spending his childhood in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, he left Tennessee to study history at Western Kentucky University. Music drew him back home, however, and he relocated to Nashville to assemble a band that included former Georgia Satellites guitarist Dan Baird. Hoge then cut his teeth on the Southern bar circuit and issued a live release, 1999’s All Night Long, before inking a deal with Atlantic Records.  With the label’s support, he entered Memphis’ famed Ardent Studios to record his official debut, Carousel, with engineer John Hampton (the Replacements, Gin Blossoms). The album was released in 2000, and Blackbird on a Lonely Wire followed in 2003 (albeit without Baird, who’d left due to the band’s demanding tour schedule). Record sales were slim, though, and Hoge found himself receiving minimal attention from his label. Requesting release from his contract, Hoge was made a free agent.  Following his departure from the Atlantic roster, Hoge combined a relentless tour schedule with a string of independent releases, from live albums and brief EPs to a full-fledged studio effort (2006’s The Man Who Killed Love). Rykodisc took note of Hoge’s work, particularly his 200-plus shows per year, and signed the artist. Draw the Curtains, Hoge’s fourth studio album and first effort for Rykodisc, was released in October 2007, followed by — what else? — an aggressive fall tour. Recording sessions for another record began in 2008, but work was temporarily postponed on August 20th, when a scooter accident left Hoge severely injured. Months of physical therapy followed. Hoge focused on his recovery for the remainder of 2008, eventually returning to the studio project in 2009 and releasing The Wreckage later that year. Hoge put out his seventh studio album, the appropriately titled Number Seven, in September 2011.  He and co-writer Eric Paslay received 2012 Academy of Country Music (ACM), Country Music Association (CMA), and Grammy nominations for Best Country Song for “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” the opening track on the Eli Young Band’s album Life at Best. In December of 2012, Hoge released the digital-only EP Modern American Protest Music, which included the songs “Folded Flag” and “Ballad of Trayvon Martin.” In October of 2013, Never Give In, his eighth full-length, was released by Cumberland Recordings. The album’s first single, “Strong,” was tapped by Chevy for its 2014 Silverado pickup truck ad campaign. He followed it in 2015 with the album Small Town Dreams, which landed at number 15 on the country charts.  While touring in support of the record, Hoge hit a career wall. He enjoyed writing songs for others and playing live, but he had fallen out of love with being in a band. What followed was a period of introspection. He let his working group go and took off on a cross-country jaunt playing solo. Reclaiming the joy that inspired him to make music a vocation in the first place, he began writing while traveling. He reentered the studio with an ace cast of studio players and completed Anchors. The self-produced 11-track set was previewed in June 2017 by the single “Little Bit of Rust” (a duet with Sheryl Crow), and followed two weeks later by “Baby’s Eyes.” The album proper appeared in August from Eldo/Thirty Tigers. Hoge quickly followed Anchors with My American Dream, which appeared in October 2018. 2020’s Tiny Little Movies was a thematically and musically diverse LP, including personal numbers about failing romances and broadsides against political and spiritual dishonesty.~ Andrew Leahey

Graymatter

Graymatter 422441698317249

The Gray family has been singing and strumming various instruments together as long as anyone can remember. Bev and her younger brothers Barry and Brad and two more siblings soaked up the folk music of the 1950s and ’60s that their father played and sang to them. Family dinners often ended with the clearing of the plates, gathering of the instruments and the singing would begin. In high school, Bev brought her then boyfriend (now husband) Dave home for dinner and he immediately joined in the family music fun.Now take the four singer-songwriters with a passion for re-imagining and re-creating the songs of their youth, mix in the swirling, 4 part harmonies that result from the close-knit chemistry of family voices and you’re describing Graymatter. The harmonies and unique song arrangements set them apart from other bands. Whether it’s tender ballads, folky Americana or driving rock & roll, Graymatter puts across an intensity, energy and vision that keeps fans coming back for more. A Graymatter show is chock full of memories for people who grew up in the 60’s, 70’s and beyond, and the band loves introducing those dynamic classics in a fresh, new way to younger audiences who have never heard the songs before. Their originals are folk/rock/Americana style pieces woven together with those same dynamic harmonies and often steeped in personal storytelling. Graymatter is Barry Gray (acoustic guitar), Brad Gray (acoustic & electric guitars), Dave Gude (acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin) and Bev GrayGude (12-string & high-strung guitars, flute, tambourine and bodhran).

BAL, …Of Sinking Ships, and Larry Wayne Slaton

BAL 422551698835081

In early 2020 longtime bandmates, Jack Foster (House of Fools, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers) and Jordan Powers (House of Fools, Far-Less), decided it was time to look to the stars for newfound inspiration. BAL blasted off, drawing from a love of all things sci-fi, as well as a shared affinity for ‘90s Alt/Indie and Heavy Rock music. Joined by longtime bandmates David McLaughlin and Joseph Powers, the four piece deliver a grunge-infused cacophony of song and sound.  …Of Sinking Ships is a dynamic instrumental band from Charlotte, NC featuring members of Hopesfall, HRVRD, One Amazin’ Kid, and Far-Less. Heavy and spacey rock that is rooted in driving rhythms with guitar-led melody. Witnesses say it is the sound of burning stars colliding and collapsing into churning galaxies of all-enveloping black holes. Larry Wayne Slaton of Old Heavy Hands trades in his telecaster for an acoustic guitar to deliver a poignant, punk rock-infused set of original sing-alongs.

Mike Dillon And Punkadelic featuring Nikki Glaspie and Brian Haas

Mike 422321697554554

A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size.  During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.

Old Heavy Hands, Tab One (of Kooley High) and Donnie Doolittle

Old 421371696966652

Formed in 2015 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Old Heavy Hands forge a compelling brand of heartfelt southern rock informed as much by the Muscle Shoals tradition as the DIY punk rock of their youth. At its core, Old Heavy Hands is about the bonds of family and the loyalty of lifelong friendships. Born from the ashes of tragedies, theirs are songs by real people for real people — inspired by true events. Tab-One was born and raised in North Carolina. He currently resides in Raleigh, NC and is best known for his work with Kooley High.
Tab weaves insightful lyricism with soulful beats. Over a decade of writing, recording and performing have solidified Tab’s spot as one of the best hip hop artists to arise from the North Carolina scene. North Carolina artist Donnie Doolittle makes distinctively moody, synth-driven anthems that hover between dark retro-pop and melancholic rock-and-roll. Over the past half-decade he’s earned a following for his playful approach to darkness, blending bright, poppy melodies into ominous soundscapes with cinematic sensibility. Called everything from “Southern New-Wave” to “Goth Americana” by the press, his genre-bending sound has drawn comparisons to singular acts like Orville Peck, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Iggy Pop.
