An Evening With: Maritzaida
Maritzaida’s musical journey began in the quaint coastal town of Isabela, Puerto Rico. Raised by her abuelos in a blended family, she developed an early appreciation for the classics, particularly the timeless melodies of bolero. Her professional career kicked off in 2012, singing for U.S. Air Force Bands and touring globally with her husband and guitarist, AJ Weibe. In 2022, Maritzaida joined SideHustle Records and her debut albums, Boleros Clásicos Volumen Uno and Volumen Dos, resurrect the traditional bolero style with authenticity, offering a nostalgic yet contemporary experience. Produced by Charlie Hunter, the albums pay homage to Latin America’s romantic heritage, featuring classics like “Nuestro Juramento” and “Dos Gardenias.” Her April 2024 release, Alma Adentro: La Música de Sylvia Rexach y Tutti Umpierre pays tribute to Puerto Rican composers Sylvia Rexach and Tutti Umpierre that highlights the Puerto Rican bohemia style: a fusion of bolero with elements of jazz and other world music. Her latest release, Sentimientos En Vivo, was produced by Hunter and reflects on the emotional depth of the bolero in a stunning performance accompanied by seven-string guitar and cello. Maritzaida’s soulful renditions, complemented by skilled instrumentalists, deliver a captivating journey through the rich musical legacy of Latin America, inviting listeners to rediscover the allure of traditional bolero.
¡Tumbao! The Home Sweet Home Tour
The Electrifying Latin Fusion Phenomenon ¡Tumbao! returns in 2024 for its biggest year yet. Coming off from a record-setting tour for the nine person Psychedelic Latin Fusion ensemble – having shared the stage with Grammy Award winning acts like Kabaka Pyramid, Proyecto Uno, and legend Mavis Staples, with performances at stages such as the Grassroots Festival Circuit, The Smithsonian, a featured artist at Jazz in the Garden in Washington, DC – the band has reached a new height of popularity, expanding its fanbase beyond its original Latin American and East Coast roots. Bringing the sounds of Latin America and the world with what many have described as Psychedelic Latin Fusion, the band is adding dates throughout the United States east coast and South America for what is to be their biggest tour year to date. ¡Tumbao! makes its way to Greensboro on May 9th for a Psychedelic Salsa Dance Night at the Flat Iron.

Tumbao! is a high-energy Latin Fusion band formed by 7 seasoned musicians from various genres and backgrounds — and we mean all different types — that creates a sound reflecting the many flavors of Latin America. ¡Tumbao! offers a taste of Salsa, Bossa, Funk, Cumbia, Latin-Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Brass. Formed in 2019, the band has taken to new heights and popularity rapidly throughout venues in the South Eastern circuit and beyond. Most recently featured on PBS, the NCMA, with performances in festival circuits such as Shakori Hills and multiple publications, the electric sound of ¡Tumbao! keeps crossing more and more barriers captivating listeners of every age and every background.
